City of the Day: Bouira, Algeria

Population: ~75 000 (estimated in 2008) in Kabile region of northern Algeria

DAILY PRAYER FOCUS

While the church movement amongst the Kabile in Algeria is many thousand strong, the government still does not grant them freedom of religion. In fact, authorities have shut and locked almost a dozen churches in recent years and believers have been dragged out of the gatherings by force. Persecution is very real for these dear brothers and sisters. The church is still gathering to worship in homes and even at times in a rented tent that is just set up outside. The believers there miss fellowshipping as a whole body, but they will not stop worshipping and praying together. Praise God for such a faithful church body here!

They ask that we pray for the church doors to be opened again, and of course we ask for their protection and freedom to gather! At the same time, we ask that this period of persecution they are now enduring would bring much good — both for them and for others!

For the Many Still in Darkness

Acts 8:6-8
When the crowds heard Philip and saw the signs he performed, they all paid close attention to what he said. For with shrieks, impure spirits came out of many, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. So there was great joy in that city.

For the Few, if any, that Have Seen the Light

1 Corinthians 1:7-9
Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

For the few taking, (or who will take) the Light into the Darkness

Hebrews 11:9-10
Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Go south to the road—the desert road—that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of the Kandake (which means “queen of the Ethiopians”). This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the Book of Isaiah the prophet. The Spirit told Philip, “Go to that chariot and stay near it.” Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. “Do you understand what you are reading?” Philip asked. “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.

DAILY PRAYING FOR A MOVEMENT

As we think back to the beginning of the church worldwide, we’re told in the book of Acts that persecution led to the scattering of many believers. Acts 8 verse 4 says, “Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went.” We see many miracles accompanying the preaching of truth and people coming to the true God through this difficult time. While we rejoice for the church movement amongst the Kabile, when we pray for other Amazigh peoples of North Africa, we often long for witnesses to them who share language and culture. In fact, brothers and sisters from the Kabile church have begun to go out into neighboring countries bearing the good news! Please ask that if He wants to, these faithful brothers and sisters could be a powerful force for spreading truth and inviting many others in cities we have prayed over this month. May the Father display His power to heal and do miracles through them and give them great wisdom as they preach His Word.
